The imminent arrival of Cyclone Yasi generated some very interesting discussion during 8J's SOSE lesson this morning. It was great to hear how informed the students are about this weather event and we had a great discussion as we critically evaluated what students had been hearing on the news to sort fact from opinion/fiction. The students are very aware of this event and some expressed genuine concern (and a little bit of fear) regarding the possible outcomes of this cyclone crossing the Queensland coast.
This is certainly an eventful summer for Queensland in terms of weather and natural disasters. I encourage parents to take some time to talk with their children about what has happened (the floods) and what is happening (the cyclones) and to listen to the children's thoughts, opinions, and concerns.
