Livebinders

Do you have overflowing Favourites or Bookmarks in your web browser? When we come across useful websites we often just add to them our favourites or bookmark them so we can easily find them later. The trouble is that when you put hundreds of web sites into your favourites, finding the one you want can take longer that conducting a whole new search. Another downside of bookmarking is that your links are only available to you on that particular computer.

Livebinders is a great way to organise your links! This service enables you to create virtual three ring binders where you can organise and store your links. You can also share your folders with others, or you can keep them private if you wish. With Livebinders you can have well organised web links that are easy to find and available to you from any computer anywhere in the world.

Exploring Wetlands

During our SOSE lessons the grade 8 students have been using current social and environmental problems to look into the future and see how we can make things better. The students have been exploring the different types of environments that we have here on the Gold Coast:
  • Rainforest - hinterland
  • Beach and sand dune
  • Wetlands - in paritcular mangroves
This study will be enhanced next Thursday, March 3, when we take a field trip to experience these envrionments first hand.

In the meantime, you might like to learn more about wetlands and their importance by visiting the following sites:

Junior Secondary Swimming Carnival

Last Thursday we held our inaugural Junior Secondary Swimming Carnival - the first time that year 7-9 students have participated in a carnival separate from the year 10-12 students. This was also the first time that we have held the carnival in our own pool, a facility that will be officially opened this coming Thursday, February 24.

Congratulations to Mr Holtsbaum and the Gibbs House team for winning the day!
It was a great day and it was wonderful to see so many of the students getting in and having a go, regardless of their swimming ability. There was great house spirit on the day and a real sense of support for one another - in fact some of the loudest cheers were reserved for students who were coming last in their race but had the determination to finish. Well done to all involved!

Parent Information Evening

The success of any student is largely dependent on a strong and supportive partnership between the school and the home.  This is why it is so important to create opportunities for parents and teachers to come together.

Parents of students in grades 7-9 are invited to make the most of one of these opportunities tomorrow evening, Tuesday February 15, at 6pm in the IGC.  I am really looking forward to meeting the parents tomorrow night.

Getting in the Spirit

Today is Valentine's Day and there is somewhat of an electric atmosphere here at school.  The students are very excited about giving and receiving special gifts that demonstrate their appreciation for one another, their friendship, and in some cases even their love for one another.

The secondary staff were treated to a surprise at this morning's briefing - 9 senior students serenading us!  This talented group have used their gifts to help raise funds for the SRC and will be visiting unsuspecting students during the day to serenade them with the beautiful sounds of love and appreciation.

The Honeymoon is Over

We are now at the start of week 3 for the 2011 school year and things are really starting to get into full swing.  We have a very busy week ahead preparing for a Grade 8 mapping test and a Grade 9 Volcano test both scheduled for next week.  We also have the Junior Secondary swimming carnival fast approaching on Thursday February 17.

It is very important that teachers and parents work together to help the students manage their time and stay on top of what can sometimes be an overwhelming workload.  One way we can help the students is to ensure that they are writing homework and assignment due dates in their school diary.  Another way is to have a calendar in their home study space that clearly shows when things and due.

With a little planning and organisation we can help the students stay on top of their work and avoid becoming stressed.  This is a skill that will serve them well now, and will continue to do so for the rest of their lives.

Have you checked your child's diary today?

Cyclone Yasi

The imminent arrival of Cyclone Yasi generated some very interesting discussion during 8J's SOSE lesson this morning.  It was great to hear how informed the students are about this weather event and we had a great discussion as we critically evaluated what students had been hearing on the news to sort fact from opinion/fiction.  The students are very aware of this event and some expressed genuine concern (and a little bit of fear) regarding the possible outcomes of this cyclone crossing the Queensland coast.

This is certainly an eventful summer for Queensland in terms of weather and natural disasters.  I encourage parents to take some time to talk with their children about what has happened (the floods) and what is happening (the cyclones) and to listen to the children's thoughts, opinions, and concerns.
